Are you sure they said timing belt? Timing belts don't generally scream, they are internal and if not working, your vehicle won't run. Perhaps they said serpentine belt, more likely, which can get glazed and cracked and slip and scream, louder as you accelerate.

In either case, cost will be the cost of parts, plus the labor rate times the number of hours to fix the problem. If it's the timing belt it will be more since covers will have to be removed, etc. Serpentine belt is fairly simple.

i would say it was your alternator/fan belt which is screaming, not the timing belt. for a start, your timing belt has teeth on it, which prevents it slippin, if it did slip, you would know cos your car would run differently. ask at another garage, for a new alternator belt changing, its no more than 50 quid. for a timing belt, no more than 200 quid. defo try the alternator belt first tho, and save money

here's an instruction on how change the timing belt.
1.) first is to locate your timing belt (open first the hood)
2.) remove the battery cable (negative cable)
3.) remove the harmonic balancer, a pulley is attached to the crankshaft.
4.) unbolt the timing cover
5.) gain access to valve timing marks. sometimes it may require to remove the valve cover.
6.) you need to align the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket marks.
7.) time to remove the timing belt.
8.) install the new timing belt.
for more steps procedure of this, check out the link, how to replace a timing belt, this has the complete step by step procedure for this. hope that this may help.
