That car had tuning trouble. The early ones had 2 carburetors. These had to run in sync or it would buck and snort and not run right. They also had trouble with the throttle shaft bushing, causing vacuum leaks.

It had the same basic engine block but with an elaborate (by VW standards)cooling system.

The later ones were the EFI experiment. It had a primitive brain with several temp sensors which controlled the mixture. The wires (all white) were sensitive to heat and would develop resistance. This would throw the brain into full rich mode. The injectors like to suck air also.

Trouble shooting was a nightmare.

Suspension was OK. The body style was nice. Kind of a small station wagon.

I disagree. The fuel injected air cooled VWs are very reliable. If someone does not know what they are doing, then sure you will have "tuning issues". Fuel injected was a relatively new concept-in fact the Type 3 was the first mass produced car with it-so in the 70s and even 80s when most cars were still carburated, your average mechanic probably didn't know how to properly service them. I remember my Dad's 1980 BMW 320i had an issue, and his regular mechanic said he didn't touch fuel injection. With proper service, the Type 3 will give many years of trouble free service. When properly set up, they are reliable, efficient, smooth machines. They ride, handle, and drive nicer than the Type 1's too.
