I think the 2001 Volvo S40 has disc brakes, and without really looking at it a mechanic guessed it would cost 500 bucks to replace the pads on all 4 wheels. Is this about right, or what? Also, is this a one hour job, or a leave the car for a day job?

at the dealer i work for brake pads are $150 per axle installed. so you would be looking at $300 plus tax. $500 seems high. a good mechanic that knows volvos should be able to do the jobs in an hour to an hour and a half.

It depends on a lot of things like what kind of pads. $500 sounds a bit high. If it includes labor it might not be and it's not that hard to put pads on so I say you do it yourself. As for the pads, just go to autozone or one of those kinds of stores and tell them your cars brand/model and they'll give you some choices.

I'm not sure how much a brake disc costs on a 2001 volvo 240, but I'm pretty sure it is worth it to get one. :D

The price is fare enough for disk brakes but if you want to save money then you can go with discount auto parts together with the DIY manual and do the repair job on your own. That's it!
